Managing resistance and controlling foliar disease is always a challenge for growers.    Single site fungicides like SDHIs, QiI and azole need protecting if we want to maintain their efficacy, and the loss of multi-site fungicide chlorothalonil (CTL) has had a big impact on cereal disease management.     That’s why more and more growers are turning to biosolutions like THIOPRON.

What is THIOPRON?

Thiopron is an innovative, natural, liquid multi-site fungicide.    It’s part of UPL’s Natural Plant Protection range.    With a unique sulphur-containing formulation made up of smaller-than-usual particles, THIOPRON is a highly effective multi-site that combines optimised leaf coverage, excellent rainfastness and better overall efficiency compared with conventional options.    It’s effective at preventative control of foliar diseases, and prevents early infections of septoria tritici, powdery mildew and rhynchosporium.   It has a load more benefits too.

How does it work?

THIOPRON works as a natural, zero residue active.    The active ingredient - sulphur - reacts on the leaf surface to produce hydrogen sulphide gas, which is toxic to pathogens like septoria tritici and powdery mildew.    Acting as an antisporulant, this hydrogen sulphide gas prevents early infections and also reduces disease spread where it’s already present.   THIOPRON is highly effective in part because of its suspended concentrate formula. Whereas regular sulphur products incorporate mixed-sized particles ranging from 2 to 5 microns, THIPRON’s make-up delivers a consistent particle size of just 1.2 microns.    Combined with a built-in adjuvant, this unique formula delivers:
  • Superior leaf coverage
  • Enhanced rainfastness
  • Greater control and overall efficiency
When compared with conventional multi-sites and other sulphur products.

Why should growers try THIOPRON on their crops?

  1. Adding THIOPRON to your cereal disease control programme will help you protect valuable single site chemistry and reduce resistance pressure. That’s a huge benefit right away.
  2. There’s no known resistance to THIORPON, making it a highly effective addition to your existing disease control programmes - one that can have a really strong impact.
  3. It has a wide tank mix compatibility, and versatile application (dose flexibility ranges between 2.0 - 3.0 L/ha, depending on conditions). That means you can apply it across a range of crops with much of your existing disease control programme. You can also use it to support a rate reduction of more expensive tank mix partners, where disease pressure allows.
  4. There’s the unique formula that makes it more effective with leaf coverage and rainfastness. Another two ticks.
  5. When compared with conventional alternatives, THIOPRON delivers equivalent or better control.
  6. It’s OF&G certified organic.
Most importantly, THIOPRON’s excellent compatibility and effectiveness makes it a highly useful addition to a wide range of disease control programmes. It helps prevent and control foliar diseases, encourages green leaf retention and improves yield.

Applying THIOPRON - When, where and how-to?

THIOPRON can be applied across a number of cereal crops: winter and spring barley, wheat, oats, triticale, rye, at T1 or T2 fungicide timing.    Check out the best practice application guide for some top tips.

Share your experiences of THIOPRON

Growers up and down the country have been trialling THIOPRON for a few years now and have seen some incredible results.    Just last year, Olly Harrison tried it on a field of wheat. What how he got on here.   If you have experience using THIOPRON, thoughts on its benefits or results you’d like to share, we’d love to hear from you   And if you’ve got any questions about application or timing, ask away and Good Growing Club’s product experts will get back to you.
